Position Description

The Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery and Communicative Disorders is seeking a Research Technologist I to support research laboratory work investigating physiological changes to the muscle and nerve after cancer treatment (e.g., chemotherapy, radiation) in a rat model. The candidate will be responsible for managing and conducting routine animal procedures, muscle/nerve dissections, processing for protein assays, quantitative analyses, and other related duties as assigned. Funding for this position is from a grant and therefore the continuation in the position is contingent upon renewable grant support.

Important job functions include:

  • Performing routine experimental procedures on laboratory animals, including behavior training and testing, collecting biological samples, and conducting surgical/non-surgical procedures
  • Dissecting and cryostat sectioning of muscle/nerve tissue, processing for immunohistochemistry, and imaging tissue requiring use of microscope and image analyses software
  • Performing other protein assays i.e. Western Blot and ELISA
  • Maintaining records on tests and experiments performed and report findings to the supervisor
  • Utilizing software such as Word, excel, Image J software, Matlab, and other video software for recording behavior testing
  • Synthesizing research findings and prepare statistical summaries
