Working/Functional Title

Associate Director of Early Clinical Experience

Position Summary

The Michigan State University College of Human Medicine’s Office of Academic Affairs invites applications for Associate Director of the Early Clinical Experience. In 2016, the College of Human Medicine (CHM) implemented an innovative new curriculum, envisioned to be responsive to the needs of students and faculty in a new technological era and a new medical landscape. This curriculum, the Shared Discovery Curriculum (SDC), provides integrated content organized around patient complaints and concerns. It is an experience-based curriculum where medical students learn by doing.

As part of the implementation, the college has created clinical experiences starting soon after students matriculate. During the first year, students are placed in primary care settings throughout Lansing and Grand Rapids communities. This is known as the Early Clinical Experience. Second year students rotate through several different types of clinical settings, including respiratory therapy, hospice and palliative care, pediatric wards, adult wards, and emergency medicine as the Middle Clinical Experience. The Late Clinical Experiences include clerkships in the primary specialties and elective rotations and occur in the community campuses across Michigan (Marquette, Traverse City, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Flint, Midland, and Southeast Michigan). In addition to the clinical experiences, students engage in intensive study of basic sciences, epidemiology, health policy and other social sciences during the intersessions which are part of the spring semesters of both the Early and Middle Clinical Experiences. The Late Clinical Experience includes the Advanced Skills and Knowledge courses spanning the last two years.

Reporting to the Director of the Early Clinical Experience, the Associate Director is responsible for the implementation and management of the programs and policies of the CHM Clinical Experiences, including:

Works closely with the Director of Early Clinical Experience, faculty and curricular assistants to plan, develop and implement curricular offerings of the ECE. Serves as a resource on clinical content for basic and social science faculty and staff.

Leads recruitment and planning for clinic experiences, in collaboration with other Shared Discovery Curriculum leaders.

Advises the Clinical Experience Administrator, who serves as a liaison to clinical practices, to ensure that the clinical practice and student needs are met.

Engages with clinical sites regarding the educational experience of students. Visits clinical practices and meets with health system liaisons as needed to support the experiences of students.

Collaborates with ECE Director to recruit and oversee basic, social science, and clinical teaching faculty.

Participates in relevant clinical experiences meetings and workshops including ECE Curriculum Development Group.

Participates in ongoing continuous quality improvement of curricular offerings based on evaluation data and student performance data.

Teaches undergraduate medical students. Teaching assignments can include formal course instruction, student advising, precepting individuals or small groups, and course, program or curriculum development.

Meets with students to discuss concerns, celebrate successes and provide feedback and coaching.

Works with staff to ensure ECE curricular materials are posted and accessible to all who need them.

Academic department and rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
