ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

As part of a thriving, top-25 research university in a city with many Fortune 500 companies, the Lindner College of Business delivers academic excellence with an emphasis on experiential learning in a multi-disciplinary environment, adding real-world value to students and the communities they serve. The college enrolls over 4,200 undergraduate students and 1,100 graduate students and provides them with unique opportunities to build professional experience, cultural competency and leadership skills through co-operative education, internships, field-study research, and cross-disciplinary studios. The college's new $120 million, 225,000-square-foot facility, opened in Fall 2019, firmly positions Lindner among the nation's best business schools with high growth potential.

The Finance Department offers undergraduate majors in finance, real estate, and insurance and risk management.   The department also offers a Master's in Finance and a graduate Certificate in Investments.  The Finance major is the second largest in the college and in the top 5 across the University. In addition, the insurance and risk management major has grown from zero to one of the top 15 nationally in seven years.

The Finance Department houses several centers that bring together academia and practice by connecting students, faculty, and practitioners in a variety of formats.  The Johnson Investment Institute (JII) brings together practitioners and research faculty.  An important goal of the JII is providing students and faculty with access to state-of-the-art software and real-time data.  To that end, the JII manages the Johnson Investment Counsel Investment Lab.  The simulated trading floor found in the lab is a focal point of innovation within the new Lindner Hall.  The Carl H. Linder III Center for Insurance and Risk Management seeks to understand and improve how economies, enterprises and individuals manage risk. The UC Real Estate Center is a resource for students and industry leaders to network and become immersed in the real estate industry.

As a center of commerce for a region of over two million people, the city of Cincinnati is a hub of innovation that attracts top business talent from all over the world. Cincinnati provides big city opportunities for business professionals with a high quality of life and a low cost of living. According to Forbes, Cincinnati is the 5th most affordable city in America, and the 9th best for raising a family. Healthgrades recognizes Cincinnati as #1 among the 44 US largest cities on the health care index, and U.S. News & World Report has ranked Cincinnati as the #1 city to live in Ohio. The community is welcoming, friendly, and inclusive. Mashable has ranked Cincinnati one of America's most social cities, and the Human Rights Campaign gives the city a perfect score on its Municipal Equality Index for LGBTQ inclusiveness.
