The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) seeks an experienced and accomplished full-time tenure-track assistant professor of Costume Design to serve as an instructor and head of the Costume Design track as part of the MFA/BFA Costume Design and Technology program.

 

Faculty duties include teaching courses for MFA/BFA programs in introductory and advanced level Costume Design. The faculty member shall also serve as one of two resident costume designers, designing as needed, and advisors for the Division’s productions in drama, musical theatre, opera, dance (ballet and modern) and other events. Faculty will assist in placing and coordinating student internships and outside work.  In addition, they will play a major role in the recruitment of both MFA and BFA students, as well as advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. All faculty are expected to provide service to the college and university through participation on various committees.

 

Requirements: 

*Teach courses in costume design, rendering, and costume history  *Advise both undergraduate and graduate students on their academic course load and requirements for graduation *Attend regular department staff and faculty meetings regarding curriculum, scheduling, logistics, artistic planning, and other relevant matters *Coordinate with the MFA/BFA Costume Technology Faculty in assigning, advising and critiquing students on realized theatrical production assignments *Work with the Costume Shop Manager on costume stock inventory management and planning for equipment purchases & rentals *Work with other Theatre Design & Production faculty members on shaping curriculum *Attend regional and national recruitment events (e.g. SETC, URTA, LiNK, USITT) to maintain/increase student enrollment.  Recruiting and annual student showcases may necessitate air travel within the US *Other duties as assigned

 Minimum Qualifications:

*Candidates must hold a terminal degree in costume design or equivalent professional experience *Candidates must have a minimum of three years of professional costume design experience *Additionally, candidates must have experience teaching or mentoring *Essential to the position is a thorough understanding of current industry standards and practices

Preferred Qualifications:

*Candidates should be proven artist/teachers with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and be willing to become part of a highly collaborative and experienced faculty *The ideal candidate should have design experience in a wide range of disciplines (e.g. Drama, Musical Theatre, Opera, Ballet & Modern Dance) *The candidate should have a comprehensive knowledge of costume design topics which may include:  history of theatrical costuming, design philosophies, costume crafts, and digital and hand rendering. 

Salary:

*Shall be commensurate with rank, based on qualifications and experience, and is competitive.

Department: The Costume Design MFA and BFA programs are part of the Department of Theatre Design and Production, (TD&P), one of the nation’s leading and most prolific departments of its kind. Uniquely, TD&P offers BFA and/or MFA programs in each of the following seven areas of production: Costume Design & Technology, Lighting Design & Technology, Wig and Makeup Design, Scenic Design, Stage Properties, Sound Design, Stage Management, and Technical Production. Its graduates are enjoying successful careers throughout the entertainment industry. 

 

Division: The Department of Theatre Design and Production is part of the Division of Theatre Arts, Production, and Arts Administration (TAPAA), which has 68 members on its faculty and staff, with numerous undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The TAPAA Division produces a main stage season of two operas, two musicals, two plays and two dance concerts in two venues: a 663 seat traditional proscenium house and a 373 seat modified thrust theater. In addition, the Division also produces a number of studio productions in all performance disciplines in a highly flexible and fully equipped studio theatre.
