invites applications for an

Equipment_Supply Technician III

to join their team. This position operates with a high degree of independence and initiative to assist all aspects of the complex organism that is the Division of Biological Sciences. Assist faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students involved in academic or research programs by providing, ordering, transporting and delivering needed equipment, materials, and supplies, following budgetary as well as time and space constraints. Maintains the DBS Equipment Inventory by locating and tagging new equipment and assisting with the surplus/disposal of outdated or unused equipment. Interface with Business Services for the bi-annual UM equipment inventory. Oversees and facilitates maintenance of DBS scientific equipment as well as some building heating and cooling (i.e., greenhouses).

Additionally, this role assists with maintenance of the plant and animal teaching collections, storage facilities, greenhouses, lab areas and teaching lab safety programs. Works with faculty/instructors to develop and acquire new “cutting edge” resources, techniques, and technologies for use in biology classrooms.

This position also facilitates maintenance agreements for equipment from various scientific suppliers and tracks maintenance schedules. Assists research labs with the monitoring of critical equipment (i.e., freezers, refrigerators, incubators, environmental chambers) for functionality, especially during time periods in which the University is closed for weather or other extenuating circumstances (for example, the Level 1 and 2 laboratory closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

This position is also involved in the planning and execution of plans to meet changing administrative protocols. Coordinate with Environmental Health and Safety Department to develop/maintain safety protocols and equipment (Emergency Action Plans, Stop the Bleed Kits, active shooter training, COVID-19 disinfecting protocols) for DBS.

Required Skills

Must be highly organized, creative, able to work independently, and demonstrate high levels of initiative when working with faculty to help design teaching lab curricula

Excellent written and verbal communication skills and must be able to work collaboratively with the other two lab support positions

Ability to work with vendors and use GrizMart to find the best value for materials and supplies under ever-tightening budget constraints

Demonstrated knowledge of lab equipment, protocols, and appropriate safety measures.

Ability to evaluate and facilitate maintenance of DBS scientific equipment including greenhouses, environmental growth chambers, autoclaves, ice machines and scintillation counters. This may involve monitoring, troubleshooting, and programming of computer control systems. This work is generally in conjunction with vendor maintenance contract technicians or UM Facilities personnel.

Must be willing to learn protocols for handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals, MSDS, spill and contamination confinement procedures, and pest control.

Position requires frequent heavy (50 lbs.) lifting, work with hazardous chemicals and biohazards, must be comfortable wearing smocks, safety glasses, disposable exam gloves and periodically a respirator. Must be able to transport materials and supplies around campus to other buildings (usually walking and pulling a cart).

Minimum Required Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Biology or equivalent. Must have a wide familiarity with Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Entomology, Microbiology, and Zoology and three (3) years of relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
