Associated Students of **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. (ASUM)
invites applications for the
ASUM Legal Services Director
to provide day-to-day management of ASUM Legal Services, providing legal counsel for students, student groups and UM student government; serve as co-personnel supervisor for ASUM employees; consult, advise, mediate and represent students, student groups, and elected ASUM executives on various non-legal issues and problems. The Director will provide supervision for approximately ten (10) persons with widely varying duties. Position requires high degree of initiative and independence, the ability to perform highly complex tasks, and work and communicate effectively with a student oversight board. The Director will propose, support and lobby for legislation favorable to students and build and maintain positive relationships with the UM Law School and the local legal community.
This position requires incumbent to possess working knowledge of all ASUM agencies, student and staff positions; UM policies; ASUM policies, constitution and by-laws; and the ability to learn ASUM Legal Services law office management software.
Required Skills
Must be knowledgeable in employment law, hiring, firing, discipline and discrimination.
Must be proficient in the use of computers and computer legal research skills.
Must have experience creating, monitoring and working within a budget.
Minimum Required Experience
Must possess three (3) years legal experience as a licensed attorney; must be, or have the ability to become licensed in the State of Montana; be a member of MT Bar Association; possess experience in general law and appellate practices, mediation and conflict resolution skills, participate in continuing legal education, ability to work with students, familiar with UM Student Conduct Code.
Must possess minimum qualifications set by UM Law School to supervise law student interns; knowledge of Montana Supreme Court Student Practice Rules.
Preferred Qualifications
Licensed attorney in the State of Montana with five (5) years of experience in the practice of law.
Experience with law office management software.
Experience managing a law office or legal services organization.
