Idaho plans to eliminate hundreds of teaching jobs to cut costs, EducationCrossing finds 9,000 jobs.

Tom Luna, Superintendent of Public Instruction in Idaho, has said that to meet its budget, the schools system will have to eliminate 770 teaching positions over the next five years. The way he plans to do it is by cutting down on hiring so that with fewer new hires the teaching staff can be downsized. Around 1,600 teachers leave the Idaho schools system every year for various reasons, including starting a new job or retiring.
The cutbacks in teaching positions would result in a slightly higher student-to-teacher ratio, from 18.2 to 19.8 in the classroom. Luna also plans to use more technology in the classroom. One of the proposals is to give every student in the 9th grade laptops, which they would have throughout high school. The students would then have to take at least two online courses.
But the proposed changes have drawn fire from the teachers unions. Sheri Wood, executive director of the Idaho Education Association (IEA), a teachers’ union says that the way the student-teacher ratio has been calculated is flawed. She also says that Idaho’s teachers are not against accountability but it should apply across the board.

''Local and state governments have been under pressure to cover deficits and no sector is going to remain untouched.''
