George Mason University, Department of Rehabilitation Science is looking for an enthusiastic and energetic person for a full-time 9-month, open rank tenured position in Rehabilitation Science (


) to lead the Human Motion, Function, and Performance specialization. The successful candidate will have demonstrated a robust program of extramurally funded research and refereed publication history related to the effects of exercise and training on physical performance in understanding movement as an emergent phenomenon and exploring the unique connection between movement and health. This research program should intersect with the department’s overarching research interests on the effects of exercise and training on human performance with emphasis on fatigability, movement efficiency, mechanical work, and metabolic economy. Our PhD program currently has over 20 doctoral students, and the department offers the first and only undergraduate degree in Rehabilitation Science in the Commonwealth of Virginia! Our Functional Performance Laboratory expanded to almost 4000 square feet in January 2018, and is well-equipped for studies ranging from motion analysis and biomechanics to metabolic and cardiorespiratory function, especially in older adults and individuals with chronic conditions. Our location in the greater DC metro area serves to provide collaborative research opportunities with local and national organizations and numerous hospitals and clinics.

About the College:

The College of Health and Human Services at George Mason University comprises the following academic units: Global and Community Health; Health Administration, Policy and Informatics; Nursing; Nutrition and Food Studies; Rehabilitation Science; and Social Work fielding a variety of graduate and undergraduate programs (BS through PhD). The College has seven academic programs that are externally accredited. The College is home to more than 1,800 undergraduate and 800 graduate students and approximately 140 faculty and staff. Primary teaching responsibilities will be to expand the movement-oriented functional performance specialization in our doctoral program and to support a comparable set of course offerings at the undergraduate level. Primary advising responsibilities include doctoral student development and dissertation research. All faculty share varied responsibilities including, but not limited to, teaching, research, curriculum development, dissertation advisement, and university and community service.

Required Qualifications:

Qualified applicants must possess: 1) an earned Ph.D. in movement science, rehabilitation, or closely related discipline; 2) a progressive record of scholarship and extramural funding oriented to movement and function in clinical populations, especially gait-related impairments; 3) evidence of college/university teaching on rehabilitation-related topics; 4) commitment to securing external funding supporting an independent line of funded research (emphasis on intervention studies encouraged); 5) effective interpersonal communication skills; and 6) commitment to teamwork and collaboration.

Qualifications and career trajectory should support rank at level of associate or professor as well as tenure eligibility. Outstanding individuals currently at the assistant professor level with post-doctoral experience and a history of external funding may also be considered. Priority will be given to applicants with clinical experience in rehabilitation.
