The Neuroscience Initiative at ASRC seeks an experienced technician to assist in the management of the day-to-day operations of a neuroscience and chronobiology lab and to oversee the care of a large library of genetic variants of the fly Drosophila melanogaster.

This position reports to the Neuroscience Initiative Director. The position is funded until June 30, 2021.

In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, duties include but are not limited to:

Designs and carries out complex Drisophilia genetic crosses in support of the lab’s research program.

Maintains Drosophila stocks, performs Drosophila husbandry, and generates new Drosophila mutants.

Manages a large collection of genetic strains of Drosophila melanogaster and its associated database.

Meets with the primary investigator weekly to set experimental goals for the lab.

Supervises and trains undergraduate and graduate students.

Oversees general lab maintenance, including organization, cleanliness, supplies, and EHS compliance; including the preparation of solutions and media, and managing the washing and autoclaving of dishware by junior technicians.

Monitors laboratory budget; manages orders and inventory.

Develops and evaluates new protocols as needed.

Ensures that weekly goals are met through troubleshooting of hardware and software issues associated with the behavioral and physiological methods used in the lab.

Manages the use of equipment and resources by faculty, students, technicians, researchers, and trainees in the lab.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree and four years' related experience required.

A preferred candidate should have:

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related science.

Previous work experience with Drosophila.

Meticulous attention to detail.

Reliable and diligent.

Excellent organizational skills.

Experience working with trainees at the undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate levels.

Organizes and manages the requirements of existing funded projects and prepares preliminary materials for grant submission

Collects information for, and assists in preparing reports, manuscripts for publication, newsletters, web sites, and other communications

Plans, designs and coordinates interdisciplinary information and research planning sessions and professional development activities for faculty and staff

May oversee one or more facilities, participating in budgeting, planning, and monitoring, and assuring availability of needed tools and equipment

Serves as a consultant and resource to faculty and staff on planning and administering research projects

Performs related activities as assigned.
