Music is something that has been in our culture for thousands of years. It rules our lives and makes us who we are to a point. So why is it that as soon as we go to work or school, music has nothing to do with our lives? Is it because it will distract us? Well perhaps in a work environment yes, but if you are in a learning environment, you would be amazed at how much this can help students.
It's interesting how those in teacher jobs have noticed an increase in memorization when using music in conjunction with other learning methods. The process is much more effective, and overall they are having a lot of fun. Interestingly enough, you can use this with just about any curriculum that you happen to be teaching.
For example, if you need your students to learn the multiplication tables, you can simply turn the numbers into a song. You can use any song you want, such as old classics, or you could just make something up. It doesn't really matter, it's your classroom! So make something up, or have your students help you with it, teacher jobs don't need to be boring, they can in fact be quite fun.
You have more than likely experienced music in education, even outside of teaching careers. Do you remember the clean up song? What about the song you sang as you were lining up to leave the classroom at the end of the day? It brings energy and excitement to the room, meaning that you will never need to have a boring class, whether it's in the middle of math, or at the end of the day.
In addition to that, it can bring your students together, which is a huge part of education jobs. Though there may be differences among the students, there needs to be a time during the day when they can forget all of that and work together to create music. This is a truly amazing part in education careers, and it is something that every teacher should try at least once.
If you are in a class of ESL learners, the music will be a great way for them to learn English. Believe it or not, English is one of the hardest languages to learn, and therefore music and repetition will teach them faster than anything else. However you choose to integrate music into your classroom, all education jobs are going to benefit from it in some way.
So give it a try, bring some music into your classroom and see what the results are. There is no doubt that both you and your students will enjoy this practice. So what are you waiting for?
