When you consider applying for online teaching jobs, you will find a wealth of positions available at universities, colleges and schools. Just as there are a variety of teaching positions through the regular methods of obtaining teaching positions, there is variety among the types of jobs you can get online. The qualifications required depend on the institution and these are usually listed in the criteria section of the job postings. Your role will be more of a facilitator than an instructor, although you will have to grade papers, tests and assignments and send the results to the university, which in turn is sent to the students.

The main advantage of online teaching jobs is that you can stay at home and work in your pajamas if your wish. You do have to keep up with the course schedule set by the university and you have to be online for set periods of time. If you teach online courses to high school students who cannot get the courses they need because they live in a rural area where the school does not offer what they need, you will need to be certified as a teacher in the home state of the college or school. The various Science courses and foreign language courses are examples of courses that are often offered online. Rural schools often do not have the funding to hire a teacher competent in all the Sciences and it is likely that only a few students want to take these courses. These schools usually offer one Science or language, but do inform the students of the opportunity to take the courses online.

There is a great need for teachers to fill online teaching jobs as more and more people want to take college and university courses on their own time and stay at home. It is the prefect opportunity for those who have jobs that they cannot give up to attend school full time in order to get the qualifications they need to change careers or be able to qualify for a better job. For teachers who do not have a full time teaching position, this type of job is perfect for giving them the experience they need in the profession. You can choose to work as a teacher during the day and teach online course one or two nights a week to supplement your income.

In order to be qualified for online teaching jobs, you do need to hold at least a Bachelor's or Master's degree in the particular subject of the course. This may mean that you also need to have teacher preparation, but with a university or college, you may not need it. Teaching experience would be a great asset, as you would know how to deal with the students and be able to understand the problems they experience with the course. You may have to pass a state certification exam to show that you do have the necessary knowledge of the subject matter. You also have to realize that courses change with time as do the number of students enrolling in a course. Online teaching jobs are not something that you can consider a permanent teaching position.
