Art Teacher Jobs
Art teachers instruct students in art – painting, sketching, designing, and sculpturing. They may specialize in teaching one or more areas of art, such as illustration, art history, or commercial art.
Primary duties and responsibilities of an art teacher include: preparing lesson plans and establishing course goals; selecting books and art supplies for courses; demonstrating method and procedure to pupils; observing and evaluating pupils’ work to determine student progress or making suggestions for improvement; conferring with student, parent, and counselor to resolve student problem; and accompanying students on field trips to museums or art galleries. Art teachers may direct planning and supervision of student contests and arranging of art exhibits. They may also teach students with disabilities.
Art teachers must treat all children fairly, irrespective of their race, colour, creed, social standing, sex or ability in order to make it possible for each child to develop his/her educational, social and moral potential to the full. In addition, they must gain knowledge and understand all pupils as far as is possible.
Good art teachers have: sound knowledge of expressive arts quality improvement issues; a varied and successful record in teaching art & design; the ability to work as a member of a team; proven organisational skills; the ability to teach effectively within short teaching periods; the ability to use own initiative; the essential ability to relate well to pupils, parents staff and other school users; and most importantly, proven empathy with children.
