Job Summary:
Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission. They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations. The Army integrates the talents and skills of its military and civilian members to form a Total Army.
About the Position:
The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC) offers foreign language instruction in more than two dozen languages on a schedule that extends throughout the year. Courses are taught six hours per day, five days a week, with the exception of federal holidays and training holidays. Work schedule is a 40-hour work week, Monday - Friday 7:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
The DLIFLC is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community & Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Major Duties:
DUTIES: The introduction to Language Studies (ILS) Department Chair supervises a team of faculty engaged in instruction and curriculum/materials development. The Chair ensures the quality of instruction, curriculum and materials for the introduction to Language Studies Department; evaluates faculty performance through class visits, performance indicators and teaching guidelines. Oversees ILS-specific action groups for curriculum review and materials development projects. Mentors and provides guidance to ILS team members on teaching methodology and techniques. Ensures technology is an integral part of developing and implementing the curriculum. Serves as SLC point of contact on matters concerning ILS, maximizing interaction between the SLC and language schools to enhance students' classroom experience. Fosters positive and constructive communication with faculty and administrative staff.

Qualifications:

LANGUAGE EVALUATION: The minimum English proficiency is a Level 3 in speaking and writing as defined in the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) level descriptions, which are posted in the DLI catalog at http://www.govtilr.org
Failure of any portion of the language tests will disqualify applicants for a period of 6 months. Applicants may re-apply after the 6 month period. Retesting is allowed only once.
Student Learning Center (SLC) Qualifications for ILS Department Chair.
· Assistant Professor:
Doctoral degree in related field with one year of foreign language and/or ESL teaching experience.
· Master's degree in a directly related field with two years of foreign language and/or ESL teaching experience. Master's degree in an unrelated field with three years of experience as a foreign language or ESL instructor.
· Bachelor's degree must have four years of directly related experience as a foreign language or ESL instructor.
· Associate Professor:
Doctoral degree in a directly related field is required. OR
· The applicant must have comparable scholarship achievements directly related to the field, to include, other degrees, professional recognition; and a demonstration of inquiry, research and critical thinking skills. Candidate must have four years of foreign language teaching experience in the field and must have used that experience to improve the field that he/she worked. In addition, the candidate must have work experience in at least two different areas within the field.
Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
