Teachers and Counselors in a Collaborative Classroom

Teacher jobs have become much more complicated than they once were. Does anyone remember the one room schoolhouse without heat or air conditioning? Those days are long past, and in order to work in education jobs, you will need to work alongside counselors to make sure that you give your students the education they need.

Many students have been identified as special needs students, and these are students that either suffer from an obvious disorder, or suffer from a disorder that cannot be seen. No matter which it is; the classroom needs to be modified to suit their needs. This is extremely important, and that is why there have been those in counselor jobs appointed to assist the students and teachers in the classroom.

These counselors are in the classroom mainly to assist the teacher. They try to hang back, so as not to embarrass the students that they are there to assist. In the old days there would only be one of these counselors in the classroom, but because of the way classrooms have grown in size, more than one is required.

When the rest of the class is working, the special needs students might be called to a separate room to complete their assignments. This is not to single them out, but rather it is to put the students in an environment where they can ask questions related to the assignment if they really need to. An environment like this is crucial for a special needs student; particularly because students can be left behind if they do not feel comfortable asking questions.

As you've probably guessed, those in teacher jobs aren't thrilled about these counselors coming into their classrooms and telling them how to do their job. That's why it is so important for you to make sure that in an education job such as this, especially being a counselor, you let the teacher know that they are in control, and that you are just there to help them with the special needs children.

The special education children essentially have what is known as an IEP or Individualized Education Plan. Because this plan is in effect it makes education jobs a little more difficult, but it does make life a little bit easier for the student. Essentially it means that instead of being taught what everyone else is being taught, the student will instead be taught a special lesson plan which will help them to better understand the subject material.

Education jobs are not always easy, and while this has not made it easier by any means, it does mean that fewer students will be left out. If you wish to apply for a counselor job, then your resume will need to reflect that you are able to work with special needs students. It is an important skill to have, because it also means that you will be able to convey to the teachers the need for having specialized lessons.

Writing your resume for this one may be tricky, but you should be able to pull it off if you really have a desire to work with special needs students and make a difference. Go out and give it a try, it might be easier than you think!
