When you tutor others in a subject, you provide them with the extra help and coaching that they need to pass the course. In order to get hired for such a job, you do need to hold a certificate, diploma or degree in the subject you teach. A Bachelor’s degree with a major concentration in a subject area along with teacher training are the preferred qualifications for this type of job. Many teachers in the regular school system also work as tutors after school hours, but they are not allowed to charge for tutoring their own students. This would represent a conflict of interest.

The are many different places where you can get a job as a tutor, such as after school programs or help programs for students with learning difficulties. You can also set up your own business when you have the proper qualifications and provide help and support to students from all grade levels. There are many types of programs that offer tutoring services to university and college students to help them succeed in their courses.

Some of the areas in which you can easily get hired as a tutor include Reading and Mathematics. These are the areas in which students commonly encounter difficulties. ESL is another area where you can set up a business offering instruction in English language to recent immigrants. If you are proficient in a foreign language, then you have another avenue for your teaching expertise in helping students master their regular school subjects or in helping adults learn to speak another language.

The area of computer technology is one area where there is a great need for tutors. If you are proficient in any area of this technology, then you should not have any difficulty being hired at the community college level or in the regular school system. You can also set up your home-based business and work full time as there are many people who want to learn different aspects of using the computer and the Internet. One way you can increase your chances of getting hired in this capacity is to take courses at a college or even online that can certify you as a computer specialist. This can include just about anything from using word documents, excel spreadsheets to writing HTML code, developing websites and repairing computers.

You gain most of the skills you need to become a tutor by working on the job. As you gain more confidence in your abilities as a teacher you will be able to recognize needs for such services in your communities. There is a need for online tutors as well where you can help students in other locations. This type of work allows you to work from home and not have to actually meet with the students. It is often preferable for parents to get help for their children in this way as they can monitor their activities as they work at home. This is one area of education where there are plenty of ways you can make a living either as a regular job or a sideline to make extra money. You charge for your services by the hour and the amount you charge is up to you.
