The Science of Thought

There are so many sciences—biology, chemistry, earth, physical, and more. One definition of science is the state of knowing: knowledge as distinguished from ignorance or misunderstanding.

Have you ever considered thought as a science?  It is!  Thought is what builds every life.  Each student, teacher, administrator, coach, bus driver, cook, and custodian in the educational community, including you, is in the process of creating personal lives.  The building materials for constructing a life are thoughts.  There are endless amounts of thoughts: good, mediocre, and destructive.

Scientifically, your life will develop into one of the three categories of thoughts.  If you choose good thoughts, you will be building a terrific life of strength and happiness.  If your choice is weak-mediocre thoughts, your life will be humdrum, routine, and dull.  The choice of bad-destructive thoughts will create unhappiness, trouble, and misery. 



Every living human being is what he or she is because of the thoughts he or she has chosen. When you drive a car, you must take control and steer it to your destination.  When you take control of your life, you must know your destination or goal and steer accordingly.  The steering of your life is accomplished by the thoughts that direct your actions.

The science of thought is as exact as the science of gravity!  One of the crystal-clear truths of this science is that every individual chooses his or her thoughts.  There will always be influences, but in the end, the choice to keep or reject a thought remains with the individual.

Many young people and adults have no clue of the power and exactness of this science.  If studied and applied, they would be able to take control of their destinies.
   
Consider the enormous number of people inhabiting the earth.  Each person is exposed to zillions of thoughts.  No way can any person choose and act on every available thought-thoughts are selective.  Another crystal-clear truth is you can only think of one thing at time. Focus on what you are thinking now, and see if you can think of more than one thing at a time.  Do you see the truth of the previous statement?

Whatever thoughts you choose, your life will develop, day after day, with the exact quality as your thoughts.  If you choose good-positive thoughts and develop a mind-shield to ricochet the weak and harmful thoughts, you are building an ever increasing path to happiness and success.  If you choose ordinary-weak thoughts, you are building a life similar to living the same day 365 days a year instead of living a new, exciting, and challenging day 365 days a year.  If you choose bad-negative thoughts, you will build a life of unhappiness and misery.  You are the boss and builder of your life

I have a framed quote from Doug Hooper's book You Are What You Think-it sits by my computer.  This quote is a constant reminder of my goal in writing.  The quote reads, "It is unfortunate that we were not indoctrinated at an early age with the knowledge of the importance of our thoughts."

What student problems are you dealing with now that might be helped or solved if students were taught the knowledge and truths derived from this powerful, not-so-well-known science?  I think your answer might be, "No way is there time to teach another subject."  Having been a teacher myself, I readily understand this.  There is a proverb that says, "If you think you can, you can."  How about slipping some of this knowledge into the established curriculum by using it for writing prompts, discussion starters, five-extra-minutes-at-the-end-of-class enrichment, or a little dab here, there, or wherever the opportunity presents itself?  It could make a big difference in the amount of confidence and self-approval your students have and possibly reduce some of your problems.  Why not give them tiny doses of character education now and them?

  • Today is like an artist's easel.  Clean and waiting for creation to begin.
